Power – Mark 9 – Elder Mark Freije

Main Idea: "This is My Son, whom I have chosen, listen to Him."

This is my son

  • Jesus is revealed as the Messiah through announcements.
  • Jesus is revealed as the Messiah by his actions.
  • Jesus is revealed as the Messiah by his authority.

This is my son, whom I have chosen

  • Jesus is the Messiah and therefore would suffer, be rejected, be crucified, and rise again.

  • Jesus is the Messiah and therefore we must deny ourselves and follow him.

This is my son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.

  • Unsure: seek the truth
  • Believer: Listen to Him
  • A decision and a continuing decision.

Growth Group Guide

  1. What advertising slogan or campaign is most memorable to you?
  2. The Bible declares that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. If you are a believer; what convinced you of that truth. If you are uncertain, what would convince you?
  3. Read Matthew 28:18-20. John Wesley said, “The church changes the world not by making converts but by making disciples”. What is your reaction to that statement? What do you think Wesley meant by a convert and a disciple?
  4. Read John 15:1-11. What did Jesus say in these verses about being a disciple?
  5. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me”. In what ways do you see yourself denying yourself and taking up your cross to follow Jesus?
  6. The Bible states it is costly to follow Jesus. However, it also states that there are many benefits. What benefits are there to following Jesus? Consider Psalm 103, John 17:3, Romans 6:4-11, Philippians 2:1-2, Philippians 3:4-11, Philippians 4:4-9
